Flight Simulator X is the culmination of nearly 25 years of the landmark Flight Simulator. Players will be able to experience what it is like to be a pilot and have real distractions, to shade their eyes from the glare of reflective paint and the glint from glass and chrome. Players will also enjoy the opportunity to fly their dream aircraft -- from classic seaplanes like the de Havilland Beaver and Grumman Goose to the Cessna 172 there is a plane for every terrain and every player.

Experience history at the controls of historic aircraft, such as Charles Lindbergh's Ryan NYP Spirit of St. Louis, the Douglas DC-3 and the world's first successful powered aircraft, the Wright Flyer. Ce titre est une vraie simulation : la modélisation graphique et le game-play se rapprochent au plus près de la réalité.

Développé pour les plates-formes concurrentes Apple Macintosh PC, et Linux il est considéré, par certains, comme le simulateur de vol grand public ayant le meilleur « modèle de vol », c'est-à-dire le plus réaliste dans sa simulation du comportement de l'avion en vol. Contrairement à Flight Simulator par exemple, les caractéristiques de vol d'un modèle ne sont pas arbitrairement données dans un fichier de paramétrage adapté mais sont issues directement de la géométrie et des profils du modèle construit.
