Overview
The Boeing B-17 Fire Fortress depicts the bomber’s second civilian career as a firefighting airtanker. Nicholas Mitchell of Simulated Air Tanker Operations modified and repainted Aeroplane Heaven’s freeware model with permission for FSX and Prepar3D.
Five operators are represented: Aero Union, Evergreen International, Black Hills Aviation, Globe Air Inc. and TBM Inc. The variants reflect their airtanker configurations.
Real B-17s served in this role from the 1960s into the 1980s, with retardant tanks ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 gallons depending on the conversion. Firefighting extended the working lives of airframes no longer serving as military bombers. The special distribution permission granted to Rikoooo is reproduced among the images below.
