Argentina: Following Route 40 from South to North

01

Understand the mission

Start with the historic context: it sets the atmosphere, aircraft choice and overall logic of the journey.

02

Prepare the simulator

Check scenery, recommended aircraft, fuel and weather before launching the first leg.

03

Follow the legs

Use the airport codes, flying times and route notes to build your navigation leg by leg.

04

Enjoy the journey

Let the route shape the experience: adjust lighting, document waypoints and take time to rediscover the story.

Michel Lagneau

Route 40, Argentina at the foot of the Andes

Ruta Nacional 40 follows the Andes for more than 5000 km. Michel Lagneau proposes an aerial reading from south to north, from Patagonia to the provinces near Bolivia.

The goal is not to connect airports by the shortest path. Follow the spirit of the road, its detours, valleys, lakes and Andean passes.

NavigationGPS, map and observation

The real road matters more than the straight line.

Understanding the flight

The article invites you to fly like a road trip: identify the road, leave it sometimes, return to the valleys.

The map should help you understand vertical Argentina, not only display an axis.

Before departure

  • Prepare each stage on the map before departure.
  • Keep altitude margins in Patagonia and near the Andes.
  • Accept detours to remain close to RN40.
  • Fly slowly: the road deserves to be observed.

  1. Southern PatagoniaSAWG → SAWT → SAWC → SAWR → SAWP
  2. Chubut and lakesSAWP → SAWM → SAVR → SAWS → SAVE → SAVB → SAZS
  3. Neuquén and MendozaSAZS → SAHZ → SAHC → SAMM → SAME

Experience tips

The best result comes at medium altitude: high enough to read the Andes, low enough to keep the road.

Use pauses to compare your track with the real RN40.
