Overview
This Project Open Sky Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft carries Discovery above its fuselage in FS2004. The exterior detail is the main attraction of this unusual configuration. The package includes a dedicated 747 panel by Ken Mitchell and custom sounds.
NASA's two real carriers were modified 747s: a 747-123 and a 747-100SR-46. Their duties included returning orbiters from landing sites to Kennedy Space Center. Mounting struts above the fuselage and additional vertical fins at the ends of the tailplane distinguished them from passenger aircraft.
A ferry flight between space-programme bases provides an appropriate setting. This is a shuttle transport operation, rather than an orbital launch.
