Canada: Following the Mackenzie River to the Beaufort Sea

01

Understand the mission

Start with the historic context: it sets the atmosphere, aircraft choice and overall logic of the journey.

02

Prepare the simulator

Check scenery, recommended aircraft, fuel and weather before launching the first leg.

03

Follow the legs

Use the airport codes, flying times and route notes to build your navigation leg by leg.

The Mackenzie River as a northern guide

The Mackenzie River runs toward the Beaufort Sea and offers a superb guide for crossing the Northwest Territories. The route follows communities along the valley to Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk.

With Roger Wensley’s Canadian sceneries, the small fields come alive and turn the route into a true northern progression.

ArrivalTuktoyaktuk

The final leg feels like reaching the edge of the world.

Understanding the flight

The river gives the route a natural structure: each stage moves north, with fewer references and more open space.

The plan is stronger if you keep the Mackenzie visible as much as possible instead of flying only by GPS.

Before departure

  • Install Roger Wensley’s sceneries if available.
  • Prepare distances and fuel reserves before each leg.
  • Use realistic but not punitive weather if you are discovering the region.
  • Keep the map open in areas with few obvious references.

Experience tips

The flight is calm, but isolation is real: prepare it seriously.

The final toward Tuktoyaktuk deserves clear weather to feel the transition to the sea.
