From Bergen to Tromso, the Norwegian coast as a flight line
Midnight Sun Airway turns Norway into an aerial panorama: fjords, harbours, islands, long northern light and a seaplane close to the water.
The route reads like a 1935 sightseeing service. It fits a single-engine seaplane, with legs short enough to enjoy water operations and changing scenery.
A pre-war tourist service.
The Norwegian coast as the selling point.
In the spirit of a float-equipped Junkers W 34.
Fjords, islands, ports and capes guide the flight.
Understanding the flight
The appeal lies in the link between aviation and landscape. The route is not only transportation; it is a sequence of coastal views.
The southbound return can be flown as a second service, with different weather or lower light to change the atmosphere.
Before departure
- Place the aircraft on the water when appropriate and set altitude to zero before departure.
- Keep moderate speed so the sea arms and small approaches remain readable.
- Use believable ceilings: perfect weather removes some of the Norwegian character.
- Use GPS as a safety net, while letting the coastline lead the route.

Experience tips
Alternate calm-water departures with windier approaches: the route quickly becomes excellent amphibian practice.
Watch drift along the fjords. Visual headings feel obvious, but crosswind can move you off line quickly.
