Around the Aleutian on Floats

01

Understand the mission

Start with the historic context: it sets the atmosphere, aircraft choice and overall logic of the journey.

02

Prepare the simulator

Check scenery, recommended aircraft, fuel and weather before launching the first leg.

03

Follow the legs

Use the airport codes, flying times and route notes to build your navigation leg by leg.

04

Enjoy the journey

Let the route shape the experience: adjust lighting, document waypoints and take time to rediscover the story.

The Aleutians on floats

This flight plan starts from a simple discovery: the Flight Simulator “Reeve Aleutian Airways” route crosses an area filled with seaplane bases, remote water strips and dramatic coastal scenery.

Michel Lagneau turns that idea into a dedicated floatplane route. This is not just a list of stops: it is a maritime flying journey through fjords, bays, lakes and exposed island approaches.

RegionAlaska

From Lake Hood toward the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.

AircraftFloatplane

Floats or amphibian gear, with solid low-speed handling.

NavigationGPS essential

Many water landing areas are not clearly marked.

MoodWild

Fog, coastal terrain, cold water, wind and long isolated sections.

Why this route works

The Aleutians are a natural playground for amphibious flying: bays, lakes, islands and narrow passages where the weather can change quickly. Even with GPS, each leg asks you to watch altitude, visibility and the actual water surface you intend to use.

It is best flown like an expedition. Keep the same aircraft, save between legs and let every stop feel like a small arrival in a remote coastal network.

Before departure

  • Use a floatplane or amphibian with short water handling and comfortable reserve power.
  • Fly by daylight if the region is new to you; water landing areas can be hard to spot.
  • Keep GPS available because many channels and bays are not marked like standard runways.
  • Let the weather breathe: wind, low ceiling and coastal terrain are part of the route.

Suggested route

Departure from Anchorage

An opening section from one of the world's great seaplane hubs. Indicative distances: 49 nm, then 64 nm.

LHD → 2R3 → 5BL

Parks and Alaska Peninsula

The route leaves familiar areas and moves toward wilder water bases. Indicative distances: 117 nm, 34 nm, then 160 nm.

LKK → 5Z9 → Z78

Remote bays and Cold Bay

A very maritime chapter with small bases and coastal references. Indicative distances: 43 nm, 54 nm, 75 nm, then 47 nm.

KIB → Z87 → KPH

Into the Aleutians

The final western section carries the full island atmosphere: wind, water approaches and exposed scenery. Indicative distances: 110 nm, 35 nm, then 48 nm.

KQA → PADU → KCN

Experience tip

Do not rush it. The charm of this plan is in the arrivals: finding the right bay, touching down cleanly and departing again as if you were flying a forgotten amphibious air service.
