Following ancient roads from the sky
The Roman Empire built about 85,000 kilometers of paved roads. Many modern routes still follow those alignments, with a familiar purpose: connect cities, cross terrain, provide stopping points and make travel predictable.
This plan offers five aerial itineraries inspired by Roman roads: Via Aquitania in France, Via Cassia in Italy, Via XVI in Portugal, Via Julia between Bavaria and Austria, and Via Romana through Switzerland.
How to fly it
- Fly low and slowly: the goal is to follow a historical axis, not to race through it.
- Ancient names give the route its narrative: Narbo Martius, Tolosa, Burdigala, Clusium, Olissipo, Genava or Aventicum.
- Overfly points complement airports and help recreate a ground route from the air.
