Peter Askovich Flight Log, Part 2: Caracas to Luanda

01

Understand the mission

Start with the historic context: it sets the atmosphere, aircraft choice and overall logic of the journey.

02

Prepare the simulator

Check scenery, recommended aircraft, fuel and weather before launching the first leg.

03

Follow the legs

Use the airport codes, flying times and route notes to build your navigation leg by leg.

04

Enjoy the journey

Let the route shape the experience: adjust lighting, document waypoints and take time to rediscover the story.

Caribbean, winter Canada, Arctic and West Africa

The second part broadens the journey: Caribbean, United States, winter Canada, Greenland, Arctic Circle, Western Europe and then Africa.

The Cessna 182 alternates IFR, polar nights, headwinds, modest strips and long crossings over demanding regions.

PeriodDecember 2003-February 2004

Stages 35 to 69.

The difficulty becomes more technical.

AxisCaracas to Luanda

A long northern detour before Africa.

Understanding the flight

This part changes tone. After the Andes, the logbook becomes more technical: cold, night, Labrador, Greenland and Svalbard require discipline.

The African descent then arrives as a new continent, with heat and long legs.

Before departure

  • Fly by chapters rather than as a simple list of fields.
  • Keep believable weather and record winds, altitudes, fuel and diversions.
  • Load the main points on the map before departure to keep the route readable.
  • Accept a slower pace: these plans become more immersive when the logbook can breathe.

Experience tips

This part deserves serious weather preparation: the north can be beautiful and brutal.

After the Arctic, do not trivialise Africa: heat, distance and weather change the rules again.
