Eric Leslie Gandar Dower’s North Sea dream

Allied Airways is tied to the determination of Eric Leslie Gandar Dower, a lover of Norway who wanted a scheduled service between the United Kingdom and Stavanger. After several abandoned Norwegian and British attempts, the route took shape in 1937.

The first section links Shetland to Newcastle through Scotland. The second gives the flight plan its identity: a sea crossing from Newcastle to Stavanger, then an extension toward Oslo, Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Stockholm.
